Benjamin has record quarter

Steve Benjamin is taking a substantial financial lead in the race to become the next mayor of Columbia. On Thursday, Benjamin reported raising raising over $100,000 in the third quarter.

Benjamin said his monsterous quarter put him well beyond his fundraising goal and that it was one of the largest fund-raising totals for a single quarter in Columbia history.

“What this says is that people are truly excited about our plan to bring bold new leadership to Columbia,” Benjamin said. “Even in these difficult financial times, people are willing to make an investment in their city’s future. I am humbled and honored by the support. And I am more energized than ever to continue our positive, issue-driven campaign so we can move Columbia forward.”

That number could reportedly be a record for a city election, although it is uncertain at this point.

Benjamin chief opposition, City Councilman Kirkman Finlay, raised only $6,000 for his mayoral campaign. Finlay said he pulled in another $29,000 for his City Council re-election account, but that money would have to be transferred before he could spend it on his mayoral bid.

The City of Columbia election for mayor will be held in April 2010. Current Mayor Bob Coble announced last month that he would not seek re-election after 20 years in office.
