For anyone following the race for mayor in Columbia, it’s really not a surprise that attorney Steve Benjamin announced for the office Tuesday evening.The last time most Columbians were aware of Benjamin was when he was running to replace ... (former Attorney General) Charlie Condon ....

It’s in our opinion that Benjamin is in good shape, with President Barack Obama’s “white youth and blacks coalition” predisposed to voting for him. ...

When he announced, Benjamin said, “We face a clear choice in this election — change, or more of the same. I have dedicated my life to bringing about real and dramatic change in my community. Sometimes that means bringing people together. Other times it means blowing past the bureaucracy and holding people accountable.

“Our single most important priority right now is creating and attracting jobs to the city of Columbia. With all that Columbia has to offer, we should be doing better than the rest of the country when it comes to jobs — not trailing behind. And we can’t be content with just creating jobs in one part of the city. Every neighborhood is important and has a role to play, and each neighborhood deserves our attention.” ...
